About Jazz Foundation
The Jazz Foundation of South Africa is an organization dedicated to the creation, presentation and preservation of local Jazz and other related creative music genres. Individuals who realised the glaring need for an appreciation of Jazz formed the Jazz Foundation in April 1983. The rationale behind the organisation's existence is the glaring evidence of commercial as well as parastatal structures prejudices against Jazz.

The biggest jazz and creative music conference known as the Jazz Education Network was hosted from 19-22 May 2010 at the University of Missouri in Saint Louis, USA. The three-day extravaganza with hundreds of attendees from around the world was highlighted by a series of public concerts from Thursday through to Saturday evenings. Oupa Salemane and Percy Hlabathi attended another Jazz Education Network from 6-9 January 2011 at the Royal Convention Centre, New Orleans, USA. They attended workshops and live performances by Terence Blanchard, Reuben Alves, Junior Mance, Danilo Perez, Terril Starford, The Clayton Brothers, Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer, Larry Ridley etc. We met with Cedar Walton, Percy Heath, Gerald Wilson, Jon Hendricks, Rufus Reid, David Baker, Yusef Lateef for discussion on possible shows with. They all expressed their wish to come to our country. We also travelled to New York for NEA Awards Ceremony where The Marsalis Family, Hubert Laws and Dave Liebmann were honoured. They all performed with the Jazz at the Lincoln Centre Big Band. We concluded our trip with the attendance of the emotional funeral of the late Dr David Taylor at the Baptist Church in New York. Ahmad Jamal was the MC. Cassandra Wilson made a rendition in honour of Dr Taylor. The who’s who of the jazz fraternity came in their numbers to pay their last tribute to this great musician who was credited with campaigning for the government recognition of jazz as an American art form and for it to be included in the school syllabus. Amongst his many achievements was the creation of “Jazz mobile” which travelled to all parts of the US to teach children on the rudiments of jazz music.
