Date: National tour commencing June 2008
Background:
A resounding musical celebration of SA’s transition to democracy that joyously honours our four Nobel Peace Prize winners. Featuring live performances across the country and internationally (North America, Europe and the Far East). The financial injection will see the facilitation and realise the artful creation of four special string instruments namely a viola, a cello, and two violins to form a “Quartet of Peace” being produced by the master craftsman, Brian Lisus. It will take approximately 18 months to make the instruments, as a result, the performances will only resume then (compiling the booklet, producing the instruments from scratch and organising the concerts around the world). These instruments are the most priceless and made in the traditional style made over the centuries to commemorate royalty, as well as the San and Ndebele art work., hand-made, most historic ever produced in our country, highly individual labels bearing Xhosa, Zulu, Hebrew and Afrikaans inscriptions., crafted of international standing and renowned for their aesthetic beauty and exceptional tone. Each instrument will be named and have an individual inscription painted and gilded on the back. The names are;
1. Freedom- dedicated to Chief Albert Luthuli
2. Peace- dedicated to Bishop Desmond Tutu
3. Reconciliation- dedicated to FW de Klerk
4. Hope– dedicated to Nelson Mandela
A series of concert performances nation-wide will be staged with the string quartet to be dedicated to Chief Albert Luthuli, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela and Frederick de Klerk (South Africa’s four Nobel Peace Prize winners). A special gala concert will be staged with the possible attendance of the three living Nobel Peace Prize winners. The concerts will be designed to commemorate and celebrate South Africa’s new democracy, support continued peace initiatives both here and abroad, and also create awareness of the many needs in our previously disadvantaged communities. Some of the proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the Buskaid Soweto String Project (BSSP). There is a strong possibility of Buskaid String Quartet joining the concerts for some of the performances. BSSP was established in Diepkloof-Soweto in January 1997. It is made up of beginners students totalling 70 ranging in age from five to twenty-four, and all drawn from the less previledged local community. Since its inception, it has produced a formidable reputation of high standards of performance and a sophisticated grasp of musical style.
As a result, it has become widely sought after for a variety of functions, many of which are of a prestigious nature. These include the appearances with international artists such as Steven Isserlis and Bernarda Fink, several performances in the presence of Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh, and Her Royal Highness The Duke of York. Each concert will produce a souvenir copy of the booklet/DVD/CD.
A local and international media campaign will be launched, including the making of a DVD documentary, articles in leading journals and magazines. A40 page colour booklet will be made of the String Quartet of Peace. The compositions to be performed at these concerts will include those by Bongani Ndodana (1998 Standard Bank young artist award winner),Mosoeu Michael Moerane (President Thabo Mbeki’s uncle who lived from 1904-1980), Arnold van Wyk and other historic South African works.
The benefit for the Sponso
- The advertising/marketing opportunities will abound your organisation’s identity and will inextricably linked to the whole project - the success of which by its nature relies on high profile public exposure.
- Your name will be associated with qualities such as “social conscience”, “initiative” and “drive”… the characteristics of the type of market leader that sets the trends and makes things happen!
- This is a sponsorship that links with art investment and a strong advertising campaign without the huge cost to the sponsor.
- The fact that it embraces four of our most famous leaders, it will undoubtedly attract international media attention.
- Ultimately, the “String Quartet of Peace” offers a timeless gift of music, for all South Africans past, present and future.
Net income to be distributed as follows:
- 50% to Buskaid Soweto String Project
- 20% as royalties to musicians and artists
